The door handle is not only a decorative addition to your home It's also an important safety feature that lets you to lock and unlock the door. As time passes the door handle could become loose or feel loose. It could be beginning to appear aged and worn. This is a good indication that it's time to replace your door handle.
One of the first indications that your door handle requires replacing is when it becomes difficult to operate. This is a problem because it means you can no longer lock or unlock your door which could create the risk of security for you and your family.
It is also an excellent idea to replace the handle on your door when it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle can be dangerous, particularly for elderly or children members who may struggle to open it. They could become trapped. Luckily, it's quite easy to fix a broken door handle by replacing the handle that was broken.
Modern door handles are typically standard sizes and should fit any door. If you're unsure if your new door handle will fit, try removing the old one and measuring its housing holes. This will allow you to purchase the right size door handle.
The most straightforward method to remove the handle from your door is to unscrew it from the door itself. This is typically done with a screw driver. However certain door handles come with the cover plate which hides the screws that mount them, so you'll need to pry off this to reach the screws underneath. Once you've removed your old handle, take an outline of how the spindle is attached to ensure that you can make sure it is aligned when you put in the new one.

Alternately, you can take off the door handle by uncrewing it from the latch mechanism. This is usually done with a screwdriver but you'll need to locate the small latch, which should be on the edge of the trim piece. Once you've removed the latch, you can take the handle off the strike plate and then remove the latch off the door's edge.
The Strike Plate
You'll need to replace the latch plate when replacing the handle. It's the plate that holds the hole where the latch of the door hooks when the door is closed. The new handles will have two latch plates that are circular and rectangular plate (see the diagram above that shows the parts of a door handle). If you have a rectangular latch plate, replace it with a round one. This will allow the latch to hook onto the strike plate, making the handle more convenient.
The first step is to loosen the screw that's holding the latch plate that was previously in place. These screws can be quite tight, and will require some force to loosen. It is helpful to get a second person to assist with this part if possible.
The latch plate should easily come out of the door after the screws have been removed. If the latch plate is stuck or won't move, use a small hammer to scrape the edges. This can sometimes open the plate up.
Now, you can proceed to preparing the new door strike plate to be installed. Utilizing the screws made of wood that came with the new handles, attach the latch plate onto the inside of the doorjamb. Be cautious not to tighten too much the screws, as this could damage the strike plate.
If you're not sure whether the latch plate is in its proper position, close and open the door to see whether it latches and closes correctly. If it doesn't then you'll have to adjust the strike plate upwards or down, or forward or back until the door closes and latches properly.
If the door still moves or jiggles, you may have to expand your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more prevalent for older doors, but could be due to wear and tear, hinge mortises that are not deep enough or not the right size for the latch, or due to a broken or damaged strike plate that is damaged or broken. If this is the case, follow the exact procedure for adjusting the strike plate, but with an iron file instead of an hammer and chisel.
Remove the Latch
The latch is an angled metal piece which slides in and out of a hole in the inside of your door. The latch moves forward when you turn the handle. It also hooks into an opening in the frame of the door to keep your door shut. If your door wobbles when you close it, an upgrade to the latch could be all you need to fix the problem.
It's difficult to see the screws that hold the latch to the door, however there's usually a small slot on the trim plate that permits you to insert a screwdriver in order to take it off. Once you've removed the trim plate, it will be easy to remove the latch as well as the remaining bolts that hold the latch and spindle in the position.
If the latch doesn't easily come out it is suggested to use the clip of a paper or tool to release it from the handle mechanism. Insert the item in the recessed latch slot and then gently twist or jiggle until the that the latch and handle are beginning to break off. It may take this several times before the latch becomes loose enough to let it out.
Once the old latch is removed it should be possible to slide the new latch into the slot without any issues. Make use of the new screws to attach the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure that it is correctly positioned in the slot, aligned with the screw chambers.
Measure the existing backset (the distance between the center of the large hole in the front of the door and the edge) prior to installing the new handle. Also, ensure that the latch size on the new handle is a good match to the measurement of your existing handle.
If you are replacing the handle or latch or handle, or if the old lock cylinder is damaged, then you'll require an entirely new one. If you're not changing locks the new latch should fit in your existing recess, and be compatible with your current keys. Make sure you select an entry point with rectangular cover plates that match your old handles.

If yours does not allow for a handle, you'll have to drill a new hole into the door. The procedure to do this is the same as for opening a door with the lock, however you'll be taking extra care not to damage the frame or door.
